Canadian Indo-Jazz Fusion

His name is Ed Hanley and he began his tabla (north Indian classical percussion) training in Toronto, Canada with Ritesh Das, and has studied with master drummers Swapan Chaudhuri in California and Anindo Chatterjee in Calcutta, India.

Ed's interests span from Karnatic(south indian) vocal percussion and drumming traditions to conducting Bharatanatyam (classical indian dance). Ed has performed across Canada, and in the USA, Europe and India in a variety of world, jazz and classical settings

We at chaiwallas were caught off gaurd by this brilliant composition he did for a modern dance group titled "Tata Blablabla", without a question it will get your foot tapping and your head shaking.

"Then Hanley transformed song to spectacle with a brain-liquifying tabla solo, an onslaught of percussive sixteenth notes and syncopated shifts hammered out by his wrists and fingers with such precision that… well, you really had to be there.

SonnyJi is the bhangra mixtape host on the BBC and over the past 3 years or so has added studio production to his live dj set talents. When you listen to his mixtape shows, you’ll hear all the classic and new bhangra tracks seamlessly mixed off the fly with popular house tunes and you can really hear the effort put into each session.

Though I am sure after number years of doing his unique bhangra house sets SonnyJi probably his own expectations of how Asian House should sound. The vocals should be spliced up into pieces and slightly distorted with the bass lines and of course like any electro track there should be a drop before the climax but not just any drop, the drop should be pure and vintage Noor Jehan

Wheres coolest place to have a Gin and Tonic in Mumbai ?

The Blue frog of course, which opened in 2008. It's a 1,000-square-meter complex that includes a club, restaurant, lounge, sound stage, recording studio and sound lab, all encased within the massive walls of an old warehouse in Mumbai's mill district. The Blue Frog Club interior may remind you of those delirious nights at the end-of-summer Exhibition with its midway games, roller coasters and dizzy-making rides. Or you may suddenly start channeling Queen Amidala, addressing the StarWarsian Senate from her floating pod. Luckily, Blue Frog does its dizzying job in a way that is totally stylish - not a tacky thing or overdone costume in sight. And everyone's table is definitely on level ground, although it does not appear so first.

Sethu Bandhasana

The term Sethu Bandhasana has been derived from the words 'Sethu', whch means bridge, and 'Bandha', which means lock. It literally means 'constructing a bridge' and mainly comprises of building a sort-of 'bridge' with the body, mostly making use of hips and legs. Sethu Bandhasana is mainly meant to help the body relax and get rid of stress. The yoga asana also helps strengthens the muscles of the buttocks, apart from the back and hamstrings and is great for invigorating and refreshing tired legs. It even stimulates the thyroid gland and the lungs, if practiced on a regular basis.

Instructions

• First of all, you need to lie down on your back, on a smooth and firm surface, mostly the floor.
• Now, bend both the knees, while placing your feet flat on, and parallel to, the floor.
• Keep your legs and feet hip-width apart and parallel to each other.
• Your arms need to go to the side of your body. Keep your palms facing downward and have your fingertips lightly touch the heels.
• The arms should be placed down in such a way that area between the shoulder blades lifts from the ground gently.
• As you inhale, put down pressure into your arms and shoulders, thrusting with your feet, so as to life your chest fully, raising the spine upwards.
• Now, take a couple of slow and deep breaths and hold the position for 5 to 7 breaths.
• Exhaling your breath, return to the original position and gradually, roll the spine back to the floor.

Odissi (or Orissi) is the traditional style of dance that originated in the state of Orissa in Eastern India, where it was performed by the Maharis (temple dancers). It is one of the oldest surviving forms of dance, with evidence dating back to 2200 BC to be found in the caves of Khandagiri and Udayagiri in Orissa.

Odissi is characterised by its curvaceous movements, sculpturesque poses full of languid grace and an imposing demeanour at the same time.

What is your memory of 1969

It was billed as the “ An Aquarian Exposition: 3 days of Peace & Music”, held at a dairy farm in the town of Bethel, New York, from August 15 to August 18, 1969. It is regarded as the post pivotal moments in popular music history and was listed among Rolling Stone’s 50 Moments That changed the history of Rock and Roll. It was called “Woodstock” and Half a million people attended it. The most memorable feeling from the event was the sense of social harmony amongst the overwhelming mass of people. Two births and two deaths were reported at Woodstock and on the opening day Spiritual master Swami Satchidananda gave invocation for the festival and Pandit Ravi Shankar sent the attendants into euphoria

Now how about this ! a British Indie band named ‘Cornershop’ does a track titled “Free Love ’69” with a Psychedelic Punjabi folk vibe. Cornershop brings a new meaning to that special year and gives us a sense of calm knowing that hope is more prevalent today and the Aquarian Age is upon us.
