Irrationalities by nikTex

Its about that time of the day when I sit by my window sill, sip on my chai, listen to music and blog. Though its different today because its raining, which rarely happens and for a soul who loves the smell of rain my windows are open.

My room is mixed with the smell of ozone and the fluid percussive sounds of the tabla. I am listening to the nikTex album “The Power of Yang” and the second track on the album has just hit me but in such a delicate manner that I am completely soaked in the calm and peaceful feeling it provokes.

The track is titled “irrationalities” and its elegance will do you in.

Mohabbat

Just as various music evokes different emotions, languages exhibit a similar trait. Some words express so much emotion that a direct translation in English does not do "Mohabbat" justice. Yes, essentially the word means "I love you" but its more then that, and truthfully I can't explain it either. Though the picture above is my best attempt at "Mohabbat" . This is John Lennon embracing Yoko Ono, and ironically his last display of such beautiful emotion, as he was murdered hours later.

Now let the word "Mohabbat" soak into your being and press play because your going to hear love and dubstep sewn together, like never before.

This is Rup Sidhu and he is
"Absolutely Mind-Blowing"

If your young or new to Massive Attack, then 'Inertia" is classic to their sound, its atmospheric, stylish and drugged out with layers upon layers of effects.

Now why is this so special for Chaiwallas Boombox ?

because 'State of Bengal' did a remix of Inertia and it is epic, especially with the flute slithering through the original framework of the track, its simply genius and classic Asian Underground.

Blouse Arouse

Blouse Arouse by Nucleya is an out of this world remake of “Choli Ke Peecha”(Whats behind that Blouse), from the classic 90‘s Bollywood film “Khalnayak

The lyrics of this track stirred controversy when the film was initially released and since then it has become a cult classic. Though in 2010, what once aroused us by its suggestive lyrics has turned into a series of sound explosions by Nucleya. Once you press play on this beast you will suffer minor hearing impairment. Though this “Soundwave Bomb” is more sophisticated then just blowing you away at once, it comes in three stages. The first explosion is when you press play and it breaks you into tiny pieces of flesh, the second explosion in 2 minutes will turn your matter into gas and the final explosion in 3 1/2 minutes will vaporize you.

So go ahead, get aroused and press play.

Valentine Curve is my Marilyn Monroe

If you could musically express the emotions of seeing Marilyn Monroe walk into a room, with a sari on, its “Valentine Curve” by Superswamis. You see and hear Monroe coming down the hall and look back in disbelief, forcing yourself to pierce through the hallway, only to find out your hallucination is true, she's wearing a sari and "holy shit this is surreal". Comparable to that twist in your gut right before taking off from a plane.

Like Monroe slowly coming to you, Valentine Curve starts in the same manner. With a faint and classy, raising and fading voice, reverberating inside your brain until its cinematic and lush images hit you in the face and instantly the room starts to spin and Marilyn Monroe is wearing a sari. A groovy paradise is Valentine Curve.

Retro Bikini Wearing Bollywood Spies

I think its time the scripting in Bollywood step it up a bit. New age Asian music defiantly is out of this world, so finding the perfect score isn't very tough but for goodness sake! Can we get a sexy international espionage thriller with some foxy lead ladies in retro bikinis ? Is this too much to ask for ? I have the opening musical score if you want some inspiration :)

The opening scene would have to be shot on the Versova beach in Bombay. Its midnight and a massive fishing vessel approaches the shore, its filled with smugglers and heroin. Its the perfect job for our Bollywood bikini spies, who watch the smugglers as they enter the port, ready to intercept and kill but for this scene bikinis are not practical we need scuba gear. The smugglers begin to laugh, dance and celebrate while unloading crates of heroin but its not before long that the bikini spies storm the ship, shoot every smuggler and disappear into the night.

This is when the James Bond style opener starts and you hear this tune by Anjali titled 'Seven x Eight', a sultry 60's spy entrance with waves of Surf Rock and Sitar.

Alchemical Work in Progress

BANDISH PROJEKT + NATHAN 'FLUTEBOX' LEE

BANDISH PROJEKT + ARUN GHOSH

Over the weekend while many us were busy with spring clean up, a magical event took place in London @ the Southbank Centre on Sunday, April 11th. Billed as the "Alchemical Work in Progress", the event was a collaborative live performance by jazz clarinettist Arun Ghosh, flute beatboxer Nathan 'Flutebox' Lee, spoken word artist Shane Solanki of Last Mango In Paris and of course India's leading lights of electronica 'Bandish Projekt'. They rehearsed for this gig literally a few days before performance and what you will see is off the fly, in the moment music.

For me as music fan this is comparable to likes of the superhero team "The Avengers". Together these artists put on a show that no single creative could and in the process melt the hearts of us all around the globe.

Now lets press play and watch the magic unfold :)

Happy 90th Birthday Ravi Shankar

Today is the birthday of Pandit Ravi Shankar and he is the most well known contemporary Indian musician. Shankar's effect is profound from teaching George Harrison of the Beatles to relentlessly carrying the Indian classical music torch to the west by writing concerti for sitar and orchestra during the 70's and 80's. Lets not forget he also performed at Woodstock in 1969.

For our tribute to Pandit Ravi Shankar we came across a question posed by BBC Broadcaster Bobby Friction (who also happened todo a recent documentary on him here)

Bobby Friction:

Wondering what the love child of Jimi Hendrix & Ravi Shankar would sound like....?

The Answer: Dave Sharma and his remix of Dheere Jalna from the film "Paheli"

Love can fade away

STAY
"Woke up in the morning,
To find a new beginning
Footprints on the floor
Saw them running across by your door

Caught you stealing your way,
Everyday,
Fingers on the wall,
Saw them running across by your door

Now I say, Stay don't you stray"

This masterpiece is by Gods Robot a.k.a Janaka Selekta and Taamara. Everything about it is hair-raising and deep, from the lyrics to the flawless fusion of dub and sitar. A therapeutic listening if you have just ended a relationship since the emotions of this recording are very real. Whether your fading away from a loved one or you have lost someone special "stay" is healing.

KaZantip Bhangra

With summer fast approaching and massive festivals all across the globe in preparation for roaring party-goers, one festival sticks out as the black sheep of them all. Its the Kazantip festival, which was originally held at an abandoned nuclear reactor near the black sea but since then has moved to the Crimean town of Popivka. Each year 150,000 paradiZers come to the town to see 300 DJ's, dance for 21 hours a day and party for one month. The main inhabitants of this festival are the eastern european mafia and lots of hot young girls.....click here for the documentary on kazantip.

Now if Chaiwallas Boombox were a tech-house outfit and were to spin @ Kazantip I would defiantly be dropping this tune by Stefano Noferini. The fresh northern punjabi chants and heavy bass will make all those mobsters in their speedos wanna get down and say "Hoi Hoi" "Shava oh Shava"
